  What is Discovery?

Discovery is a software solution that allows organizations to audit, track and manage changes to their IT assets. Using Discovery you can quickly and easily:

  • Inventory your assets
  • Identify their physical location
  • Determine if you have the appropriate hardware configuration to support new software upgrades
  • Identify all hardware, software and location changes made to a PC for any given period of time
  • Share the data with other applications

Why is inventory important to my business?

The more control you have of your IT assets, the more control you have over associated costs, purchases, help desk support and overall desktop management. In addition, the more information your IT personnel have about each system the more efficient they are - support calls will be shorter, software upgrades are easier and more time is left for innovative projects to allow your to business to grow.

What type of organization would benefit from Discovery?

Whether you have 50 or 5,000 PCs in your organization, your information technology (IT) assets are critical to the success of your business. But how much control do you have over these assets after they are purchased?

The more knowledge you have about your IT assets, the more control you have over associated costs, purchases, help desk support and overall desktop management.

  How Does Discovery work?

Discovery is installed on a Novell NetWare or Windows NT server. The Client agents are then deployed to client PC’s via one of the deployment methods – Login scripts, pushed via NT/2000 services, via email or a standalone diskette.

Once these client agents have been installed, the Discovery Control Center is used to centrally manage and view the results of all audits carried out. The unique LANProbe technology also enables you to discover and track the physical locations of all your network devices within your organization.

  What platforms does Discovery support?

The Client Audit Agent will audit PC’s running the following operating systems:

  • DOS
  • Windows 3.x
  • Windows 95/98/NT
  • Windows 2000

Network Environment:

  • Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 and higher
  • Novell NetWare version 3.1.1 and higher and IntranetWare

LANProbe requires the TCP/IP protocol on an Ethernet-based network

SQL Server (MSDE -supplied with Discovery) requires:

  • Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT4/2000
  • Pentium 166Mhz processor with minimum 64Mb memory and 80Mb disk space
  Does Discovery support Windows 2000?

Yes – Windows 2000 is fully supported

Do I need to purchase a copy of SQL server to run Discovery?

No – Discovery is supplied with a runtime version of Microsoft SQL (MSDE).

How can I obtain an evaluation copy of Discovery?

30 day evaluation copies of Discovery are available either by Link Technology.

What is the difference between the demo and the evaluation versions?

The evaluation version of Discovery is a full running version of the product limited by length of time and number of assets that can be stored in the repository.

The Demo version available for download is a free-standing version of the product that enables you to view the functionality available without needing to deploy the client agents.

  How is Discovery licensed?

Discovery is licensed per PC audited on the network. A license is not required for other network devices.

How can I upgrade to Discovery from existing 2000 solutions?

If you install Discovery on a computer that already has one of the 2000 products installed, the installation program detects this product and offers you the opportunity to preserve the existing information. In this way, the 2000 Repository can be preserved and imported into the Discovery Repository. All the computers are placed in a new 2000 Organizational Unit and marked as "2000 computers".

What kind of technical support can I obtain for Discovery?

Initial purchase of Discovery will include free of charge product support for a period of 60 days and thereafter product support will be available on an annual or multi-year agreement.

The Discovery product support includes telephone technical support, e-mail support and access to our on-line knowledge base - a valuable source of information on operating your software consisting of technical reports and frequently asked questions. Full provision of available product updates and also minor product upgrades will be shipped to end users upon request.

Telephone technical support is provided from both our UK and USA offices.

How can Discovery help detect people installing unsupported and unlicensed applications within the organization?

You can swiftly determine whether your organization is legally compliant with software licensing, as Discovery will show how many times an application has been installed and compare this against the number of licenses purchased.

With many inventory products available, why would I select Discovery?

Customer demand drove the development of Discovery. was already in the inventory market with 2000, our year 2000 product line. 2000 provided hardware and software inventory, in addition to y2k testing and correction. Many of our customers did not have inventory products and found 2000 so easy to deploy, they began requesting more and more auditing features.

Although there are many network-based inventory products available today, many of these products do not provide a complete inventory and tracking of the assets. The key inventory features they are missing are the detection of the physical location of the assets and the tracking of installs, moves, add and changes to the PC.

  What makes Discovery unique?

Discovery is unique in several ways: First, the LANProbe is patent pending technology that will determine where a network device is physically attached, enabling the network administrator to easily determine the physical location of the device. Knowing the physical location of a device provides a comprehensive inventory that is the foundation for asset management, desktop management and help desk support.

Discovery is also unique in that it tracks all installations, moves, additions and changes made to the PCs, including location changes, and maintains a complete audit history. This information can expedite help desk problem resolution by providing the technician with detailed information on demand.

In addition, the Discovery product can be deployed in a variety of ways to accommodate organizations with a variety of computing requirements. Deployment can be done using login scripts, Windows NT/2000 services, and through email for mobile users. Non-networked PCs can also be audited using a standalone test disk.

What impact will Discovery have on network traffic?

Discovery is designed to minimize network traffic. Audit results sent from each client contain only differences from the previous audit. In most cases this is approximately 1-2K in size. The first audit will be larger, typically 80-100K.
